Matt Skiba accidentally thanks the wrong member of The Chinkees for Asian Man Records and career

Long-running independent punk rock record label Asian Man Records celebrated its fifteenth anniversary of existence this past June. Label owner Mike Park set up a 5-day celebration festival, featuring performances from many of the label roster’s top acts, some of which hadn’t performed together in years. The festival kicked off with a show featuring Park’s The Chinkees, MU330, and a reunion set by the infamous ska/punk act Slapstick.

But for a label which has made large strides toward racial tolerance in the underground music scene, Alkaline Trio’s Matt Skiba’s inebriated guest appearance made things weird. He stumbled on stage during Slapstick’s set and took the microphone for a few moments.

“Yo Brendan. Can I say something. Hey. Slapstick ‘s playing tonight in SF. What the fuck’s up with that. Steve Choi is the reason that we have careers. Argue with me that, Brendan. I love you. But Steve Choi said, “hey, I wanna do this Asian Man thing.” We were like “well, we’re not so fond of Asians, but we’ll do it anyway. Quote unquote, I don’t like your driving, but I will fucking play your show.”

After an awkward silence and some boos, the rant continued.

“But for real, we’re in the fucking bay area with the best of friends. Steve Choi’s the reason I have a career. And it’s not like a career like Gwyneth Paltrow, it’s like… friends. I grew up with all these guys. Asian Man Records is the reason I have a career. I’m gonna eat your asshole out.”

Brendan Kelly subtly shot Matt Skiba with a tranquilizer dart and had him escorted off stage, before the band kicked into a rousing version of “’74 Fullerton” for the last time ever.

Mike Park could not be reached for comment.

Please keep doing this! This shit is hiLARious!

  • I was there, and I’m quite certain that Skiba at least gave credit to Mike Park, and not Steve Choi, whoever that is. He was obviously drunk and/or high, and did talk a little shit about Asians, but it was pretty obvious that he was being facetious. He did also repeatedly mention that Mike Park is the reason he has a career.

Good thing Daniel was there to clear things up for us!

  • I spoke to Steve Choi yesterday and can clarify that he was infact responsible for Matt Skiba’s career.
